My name is Kristin Goers and I am the 2nd Grade teacher here at OLA. I have been teaching 2nd grade here for 6 years now, as well as coaching the track team, which I started when I began at OLA. I was born and raised in Kansas City and attended a Catholic school my entire life. I continued my education at Regis University in Denver Colorado where I received my Bachelors and license in Elementary Education. Attending a Catholic school and Jesuit University, I am a firm believer in Catholic education. I received my Masters Degree in Multi-Disciplinary Education in May 2009 from Webster University. I love working with children and instilling positive values within each of them every day.
In second grade, the students work very hard throughout the school year. They work to become fluent readers, to read for comprehension, and to make connections within their reading (text to text, text to self, text to world). Their writing techniques continue to develop and become more descriptive, while introducing how to write in cursive. They are mastering addition and subtraction facts, understanding place value, identifying numbers that are odd or even and greater than or less than, telling time, identifying shapes, understanding parts of a whole, and just developing an overall number sense. The second graders have a complete understanding of the different types of animals in the world, the different habitats where those animals live, and what those animals do to survive in those habitats. They are identifying with the world around them, understanding that there are certain jobs and laws to keep them safe and to keep the world running properly. They understand that learning about the past and what happened in history is very important because the world use to be very different then it is today. They know that because people from the past stood up for what they believed, discovered certain things, and made new inventions, the world is what it is today. The second graders are always intrigued to learn more and BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE!!!
